The Future of Our City

The Future of Our City: One Day on Earth & OutdoorFest

One Day on Earth (ODOE) is an innovative documentation initiative looking to answer “10 questions for the future of your city.” By encouraging diverse organizations to film footage during the same 24 hour period all over the world, they uncover a more comprehensive understanding of cities through individual, grassroots stories.

For one day, we’ll work to capture how outdoor recreation and NYC intertwine, and then submit the footage ... to answer the larger question: What does this all say about our city?

We are very excited to officially partner with their NYC team. We've already starting to plan our videographers and locations for the April 26th filming in NYC. We're also brainstorming which stories will help to answer questions like “Why are you in this city?” and “What are your city’s greatest challenges?”

While OutdoorFest is geared toward a niche community in New York City - we look at ODOE and see a project that is very similar to ours: one that’s exploring and understanding cities in order to make them better and ultimately trying to figure out "how we can better live together in tight communities."

When we head out with our local partners and join in the filming, we’ll aim to capture diverse angles from the recreational uses of our ever-changing waterfront to the politically infused decisions that have shaped public access to these places. We’ll physically look at the rocks, some here since the time of New Amsterdam, and see how people interact with them as a growing cadre of climbing enthusiast’s head to public spaces to create community.

For one day, we’ll work to capture how outdoor recreation and NYC intertwine, and then submit the footage to a larger One Day on Earth initiative that will use the stories to answer the larger question: What does this all say about our city?

We’re not sure what they’ll find so we're opening comments (below): What is the future of our city? What is the future of the outdoor community here? What do you think filming stories from myriad niche outdoor communities here will show us? What happens when you truly explore New York?
