Camping at Giant Ledge

Head up to Big Indian New York for one of the best hikes in the Catskills. This trip is a little over 3 miles and will provide incredible views and a chance to camp in the wilderness.

Part I: Hiking

-Park here, then the trailhead begins at base of the road, to the left

After signing the register, begin your hike on the yellow-blazed Phoenicia-East Branch trail. Take a left at first trail junction towards blue-blazed Giant Ledge / Panther Mountain trail. You'll follow a steady incline as you ascend over 1.5 miles to the first ledge.

Follow the ledges along the mountainside for some of the most beautiful views in the Catskills. Camp at the top or follow the same route back for access to the other campsite option.

Part II: Camping

There are 2 DEC primitive camping areas along this trail:

1. At the top of Giant Ledge there are campsites sprinkled off the side of the trails.

2. Head back down from the ledges to the first trail junction to find one of the primitive campsites

Insider tips:

*Because of the spectacular views it can get a bit crowded: get hiking early

*The trail is very rocky - be careful of rain and fallen leaves

*For campers: make sure to bring a bear canister of some sort

*Wake up for the sunrise! Make yourself a cup of hot coffee, choose a ledge of your own, and take it all in.
